Preparing for full-time RVing means downsizing what you have and doing more with less. One task is to downsize your work space. I have a huge desk with a hutch that used to hold tons of office supplies. But working out of my RV will require a smaller work space and the ability to store supplies easily.

Feel overwhelmed at the thought of shrinking your work space? No problem; just ask yourself three simple questions:

What will I do in my work space?

Figure out what kind of work you’ll be doing on the road. Will you produce YouTube videos, knit afghans for sale, read Tarot cards? As for me, I expect to do a lot of writing–blogging, building a business, and doing freelance writing. This means a lot of sedentary work, but I don’t envision taking up a lot of surface area.

What will my work space look like?

Given the kind of work you’ll do, envision how you should set up your work space to optimize creativity and productivity. As for me, I want my work space to be comfortable and to have enough surface area for my laptop, my office tote (see below), and for writing notes. Because I like things to have more than one use, I need to convert the work space to a lounge area or dining table in just a few minutes. I’ll also need adequate lighting, and I want to get up and move around to avoid the health risks of sitting too much.

What equipment will I use?

Your equipment should be appropriate for your work space. For example, I’ll need a laptop that’s portable so I can store it out of sight when it’s not in use. But what about office supplies, like my stapler, scissors, pens/pencils, and sticky notes? These also need to be contained and tucked away when I’m not working. That’s why I bought an Everything Mary Deluxe Store and Tote, which contains all my supplies. I can move it out of sight very quickly.

Shrinking down your work space for RV living is not so difficult if you just ask yourself these three simple questions. You really don’t need that much to create a comfortable space where you can be creative and productive.
